Our story
Life is beautiful,
wherever you are.
I’m Anun. I was born and raised in Thailand, and I’ve traveled to every province in the country. But I’m still discovering Thailand.
It started with a Lonely Planet.
One of my most unforgettable journeys was in 1993. I traveled overland from Penang to Bangkok. There were no smartphones, Google Maps, online reviews or instant hotel bookings. I had a Lonely Planet guidebook.
Hotel coffee shops had old-fashioned notice boards where travelers exchanged information and found other people heading in the same direction. Travel worked differently then. Somehow, that uncertainty became part of the adventure.
I met a German traveler and went camping on Koh Mook, then explored around Koh Rok in Trang. On a train to Surat Thani, I met a Norwegian traveler. At some point we found ourselves howling at the moon like wolves.
Those weren’t luxury trips. They weren’t perfectly planned itineraries. More than thirty years later, I still remember them.
Why ThaiDetour exists
Travel today is much easier. We can find a hotel in seconds, read hundreds of reviews and navigate almost anywhere from our phones. That is wonderful. But sometimes, with so much information telling us exactly where to go, we lose a little of the discovery that made travel exciting.
ThaiDetour is a modern version of those old coffee-shop notice boards: a local voice saying, “You should try this place next.”
Cheers,
